Basic human right concepts – UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities

This document includes the basic slides of the presentation delivered by the Independent Authority for the Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, during the training programs that take place at the Cyprus Academy of Public Administration and are addressed to officers of the public service. The programs aim to raise awareness on the principles of respect and protection of rights of persons with disabilities (pwd), so as to contribute to a substantial and effective compliance with the principle of equal treatment. The objective of the presentation is to familiarize the participants with the basic cross-cutting concepts/principles of the UN Convention, a deep understanding of which is necessary for achieving compliance with state obligations in relation to disability, securing human rights and combating stereotypes, prejudice and other barriers to equality irrespective of disability. Defining and exorcising hatred

This manual provides a definition of hate speech and collectively sets out the basic principles and definitions of hatred, such as racism, prejudice etc, as well as its basic forms of expression. It also includes the consequences of such attitudes while indicative examples of extreme expressions of such attitudes are provided, that have been recognized as crimes against humanity. Also provided are guidelines for exorcising hatred. The manual is a result of the cooperation between the Youth Board of Cyprus and the Anti-Discrimination Body. Are you a person with disability? Claim your rights!!

Basic information is provided on the rights protected under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities, the role and competences of the Independent Authority for the Promotion of the Rights of pwd. Reference is made to specific hypothetical scenarios where violations of human rights at the expense of pwd occur. In the publication one may also find information regarding the submission of complaints to the Independent Authority as well as basic contact details of the Authority and organizations that engage with disability-related issues. Guiding Principles for the media against racism, xenophobia and discrimination

This manual codifies basic guiding ethics principles for fulfilling the mission of the media to respect diversity and tackle discrimination. Its publication seeks to raise awareness of all media actors, so as to avoid the reproduction of racist and xenophobic speech, prevent social exclusion, as well as to promote mutual understanding, fraternization, peaceful and creative coexistence. The issuance of the manual took place at the occasion of an Action and the events’ program of the Office of the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights that were carried out in relation to combating discrimination, which was funded through the community program “PROGRESS”. Action Plan of the National Preventive Mechanism for Torture for year 2011 and 2012

The documents refer to the provisions of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention Against Torture (OPCAT) which, following its ratification, have led to the appointment of the Ombudsman as the National Preventive Mechanism. The OPCAT and the Ratifying Law regulate the competences and powers of the Ombudsman to regularly visit places of deprivation of liberty and make suggestions for further strengthening and respect of human rights in such places, as a means of preventing ill-treatment. Moreover, the Action Plans set out include the goals and thematic priorities decided by the Ombudsman for each year and the program of monitoring visits to places where people are detained (prisons, police custody) or reside, in conditions of deprivation of liberty (the elderly, persons with disabilities, psychiatric patients).For the document in Greek, please press here.
